Spinal InjuriesSpinal injuries—including Paraplegia, Quadriplegia, Herniated/ruptured discs, and fractured/crushed/broken vertebrae bonesSpinal injuries or nerve damage injury can occur at any time to any individual who is the victim of a traumatic event. In fact, we have handled cases involving spinal injuries that were the result of auto and trucking accidents, falls, recreational activities, sports participation, work place accidents and other incidents. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, about 10,000 Americans suffer some form of acute spinal cord injury each year. Similarly, the National Spinal Cord Injury Association estimates that an average of 30 spinal cord injuries occur each day in the United States. While some patients recover quickly, others may experience permanent paralysis. The emotional trauma and high medical costs can be overwhelming for victims and their families. This can be especially true for the less obvious spinal injuries, such as when a person has herniated or ruptured discs in the back or neck. This is true since many times these types of spinal injuries are initially diagnosed by emergency medicine doctors or family doctors as back or neck “sprains” or “strains”, and the patient is initially treated with muscle-relaxers and pain medication for a period of time (usually around 3 to 6 months). Only later, when the pain and symptoms do not improve or become worse will the treating doctor refer the patient for more diagnostic work, such as an MRI or CT scan, which then reveals a more serious condition, such as a “herniated” or ruptured disc that is pressing on the nerves in the spine. Unfortunately, surgery may become necessary when the pain continues or worsens, or if neurological deficits occur, such as numbness or tingling in the arms or legs. Naturally, if a spinal injury requires surgical intervention, the patient’s care will become considerably more expensive, and the patient will have a longer recuperation period resulting in significant loss of earnings due to the inability to work during the recovery period. We at Flynn & Gottlieb, P.A., have confronted and dealt with hundreds of these types of cases, and are very experienced in obtaining the evidence needed from doctors and other experts to demonstrate the extent of injury, and to prove all the compensation necessary to obtain “full-justice” needed to care for the client’s present and future needs, including medical expenses, loss of income, physical and emotional suffering, and the effects these things will have on the client’s family and spouse. Should you require assistance with a spinal injuries or nerve damage injury claim, please contact us immediately.
